This guide will help you prepare for your upcoming grading. Remember that the actual format may vary at the examiner’s discretion.

- Walking Stance with Back Fist Side Strike

Three Step Sparring (Sambo Matsoki)
Attack Format: Always three middle section front punches in walking stance, starting with right leg back in low block.
Defenses: Start from Parallel Ready Stance
- Defense Five:
- Step back with right leg into L stance
- Execute middle outer forearm block to the inside (two times)
- Counter attack: Move to the right into sitting stance parallel to opponent, execute a left outer forearm block and a high section punch simultaneously
- Defense Six:
- Step back with right leg into L stance
- Execute middle knifehand block to the inside (two times)
- Counter attack: Move to the right, form sitting stance parallel to opponent, execute left outer knifehand guard and a high inward knifehand strike to the neck
- Defense Seven:
- Step back with right leg into L stance
- Execute middle outer forearm block to the inside (two times)
- Counter attack: Move right foot to left foot, push off left foot sliding back at 45-degree angle into right L stance with forearm guarding block, execute right front kick landing in right walking stance with double punch

Do-San Pattern
Number of Movements: 24
Meaning: Do-San is the pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1876-1938), who devoted his life to furthering education in Korea and its independence movement.
Starting Position: Parallel ready stance
Movement Sequence
- Move left foot to B, forming left walking stance while executing high side block with left outer forearm.
- Execute middle punch with right fist while maintaining left walking stance toward B.
- Move left foot on line AB, turn clockwise to form right walking stance toward A while executing high side block with right outer forearm.
- Execute middle punch with left fist while maintaining right walking stance toward A
- Move left foot to D, forming right L-stance while executing middle knife-hand guarding block.
- Move right foot to D, forming right walking stance while executing middle thrust with right straight fingertip.
- Twist right knife-hand counter-clockwise until palm faces downward, move left foot to D turning counter-clockwise to form left walking stance while executing high side strike with left back fist.
- Move right foot to D, forming right walking stance while executing high side strike with right back fist.
- Move left foot to E, turning counter-clockwise to form left walking stance while executing high side block with left outer forearm.
- Execute middle punch with right fist while maintaining left walking stance toward E.
- Move left foot on line EF, turn clockwise to form right walking stance toward F while executing high side block with right outer forearm.
- Execute middle punch with left fist while maintaining right walking stance toward F.
- Move left foot to CE, forming left walking stance while executing high wedging block with outer forearm.
- Execute middle front snap kick to CE with right foot, keeping hands in same position as movement 13.
- Lower right foot to CE, forming right walking stance while executing middle punch with right fist.
- Execute middle punch with left fist while maintaining right walking stance toward CE (perform 15 and 16 in fast motion).
- Move right foot to CF, forming right walking stance while executing high wedging block with outer forearm.
- Execute middle front snap kick to CF with left foot, keeping hands in same position as movement 17
- Lower left foot to CF, forming left walking stance while executing middle punch with left fist.
- Execute middle punch with right fist while maintaining left walking stance toward CF (perform 19 and 20 in fast motion).
- Move left foot to C, forming left walking stance while executing rising block with left forearm.
- Move right foot to C, forming right walking stance while executing rising block with right forearm.
- Move left foot to B, turning counter-clockwise to form sitting stance toward D while executing middle side strike to B with left knife-hand.
- Bring left foot to right foot, then move right foot to A forming sitting stance toward D while executing middle side strike to A with right knife-hand.
End: Bring the right foot back to ready posture
Practice Tips
- For Do-San pattern, pay special attention to the fast motion techniques (movements 15-16 and 19-20)
- When executing fingertip thrusts, maintain proper fingertip position with thumb tucked in and wrist straight
- For back fist side strikes, generate power from hip rotation and keep the wrist straight
- When performing wedging blocks, ensure both forearms move simultaneously with proper angle
- For turning kicks, chamber properly and pivot on the supporting foot
- In side kicks, ensure your footsword (blade of foot) is the striking surface
- Practice the three step sparring sequences with a partner to develop proper timing and distance
