A Personal Journey in Uniting and Elevating UK Taekwondo: The British Taekwondo Council
As a TAGB Tae Kwon Do instructor, my life revolves around the dynamic world of martial arts, where Taekwondo has carved a distinct path, emphasising physical strength and the values of respect, discipline, and perseverance. In the United Kingdom, my experience with the British Taekwondo Council (BTC) is a testament to its pivotal role in nurturing and advancing this sport. Recognised by the sports councils as the National Governing Body (NGB) for Taekwondo, the BTC has been instrumental in my journey, promoting unity and progression in this martial art nationwide.

The Genesis of the British Taekwondo Council from My Perspective
Creating the BTC was a strategic milestone that greatly impacted my teaching and practice of Taekwondo. In collaboration with sports councils, the initiative aimed to consolidate support for developing Taekwondo across the UK. This move united the diverse strands of our community under one umbrella, simplifying the coordination of efforts, sharing best practices, and advocating for the needs of practitioners and clubs countrywide. From my vantage point, this unity was crucial in amplifying our voices and enhancing the reach and impact of Taekwondo across the UK.

Embracing Diversity in Taekwondo as a TAGB Instructor
My journey has taught me that Taekwondo’s strength lies in its diversity. The BTC’s inclusive approach, recognising various styles from the ITF to the Kukkiwon and independent groups, has resonated deeply with me. This diversity mirrors the dynamic and evolving nature of Taekwondo, ensuring every practitioner feels valued and supported. As an instructor, this ethos has been central to my teaching, fostering an environment where every student can thrive, regardless of their background or style affiliation.

Building a Community of Passion and Dedication
Leading by example in the BTC’s vast network, which comprises over 25,000 members across 12 member organisations, has been one of my most rewarding experiences. This community is a melting pot of athletes, coaches, referees, and enthusiasts, all united by our commitment to Taekwondo. Our collective dedication and passion towards a common goal have driven the council’s strength. Beyond overseeing administrative duties, my involvement has been nurturing a supportive ecosystem that encourages growth, learning, and excellence.

My Role in Advancing Taekwondo in the UK
The BTC’s mission to promote and advance Taekwondo across the United Kingdom resonates with my goals as an instructor. This mission encompasses increasing sports participation and interest, raising performance levels, and enhancing professionalism within our community. By upholding teaching standards, competition, and conduct, I’ve contributed to ensuring that Taekwondo in the UK is respected and remains competitive on the global stage. Moreover, advocating for Taekwondo with national sports authorities has been pivotal in securing our practitioners’ necessary recognition, funding, and facilities.
